Certificate and Class Chart


CERTIFICATE CLASS AND DEPARTMENT TO WHICH THE CERTIFICATE ADMITS

High school Diploma or secondary School
Leaving certificate, based on at least twelve years of schooling starting with Elementary I class
  • Freshman Sciences or Arts

Students who successfully complete the freshman class will be promoted to the sophomore class, after presenting a certificate equivalent to the Lebanese Baccalaureate, without having to sit for the Entrance Exams. They will be judged not only on their Freshman year record but also on the basis of their scores on the required SAT I and SAT II. Applicants may try to improve their scores by re-taking the tests.  


Holders of government secondary certificates also qualify
for admission to the sophomore class in different

faculties as follows:

Literary
  • Sophomore majors1 in the FASS, FOB1, ALBA, FOS1, FOE2, or FHS.
Scientific
  • All Sophomore majors.
Lebanese or French Baccalaureate
(General Sciences, or Life Sciences)
  • All Sophomore majors.
Lebanese or French Baccalaureate
(Literature and humanities or sociology and economics)
  • All Sophomore majors1 in FASS, FOB, FOS, ALBA, FOE2, FHS.


1 Students who hold the Lebanese or French Baccalaureate (literature and humanities or sociology and economics) or a governmental secondary certificate, or a certificate or diploma considered by the University to be equivalent to the Lebanese Baccalaureate, may be required to take additional freshman level courses in mathematics and sciences pertaining to their majors in FOS or FOB.

2 Students who hold the Lebanese or French Baccalaureate (literature and humanities or sociology and economics) or a governmental secondary certificate, or a certificate or diploma considered by the University to be equivalent to these Lebanese Baccalaureates, may seek admission to any of the four engineering majors after they have completed a minimum of six credits of freshman level mathematics and a minimum of nine credits of freshman level natural sciences as students.


 
CERTIFICATE CLASS AND DEPARTMENT TO WHICH THE CERTIFICATE ADMITS

Technical Baccalaureate admits to programs
that are similar in nature to the area ofconcentration.
  • Students may join the SOP program. (refer to Special Programs section)

General Certificate of Education (GCE)
And Oxford or Cambridge Higher Certificate

A total of seven different subjects are required, at
least two of which are at advanced level.

Arabic and English at ordinary level may not be
counted as one of the five required subjects at
ordinary level.

Arabic at advanced level may not be counted as
one of the two required subjects at advanced level.

The GCE advanced supplementary subjects may be
recognized for the purpose of admission.

A GCE certificate based only on O-level subjects does
not admit to the university at any level.

Holders of the GCE certificate with subjects as specified
above may apply for admission to the freshman class.
If they choose to do so, they may be given freshman credits
for courses equivalent to A-level subjects in which they
received high scores.

Holders of the GCE certificate as specified above
may apply for admission to the sophomore class.

For those who followed the Literary track

  • All Sophomore majors1 in FASS, FOB, FOS, ALBA, FOE2, FHS.

For those who followed the Scientific track
  • All Sophomore majors in FOB, FASS, ALBA.
  • Applicants to FHS must have passed Math and Chem at advanced level.
  • Applicants to FOE must have passed Math and Phys at advanced level.
  • Applicants to the sophomore class in the Faculty of Sciences must have passed Math at advanced level (for CS and IS majors) and other science subject at advanced level according to their major field of study as indicated below, or take freshman level courses or their equivalents.
Departmental Requirements
To Major in: Must have taken the following subject at
Advanced level, or freshman equivalents
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Math and Biol
  • Math and Chem
  • Math and Phys
  • Math and one from Biol, Chem, or Phys
International Baccalaureate Diploma
Six different subjects are required:
Three at higher level (HL)
and three at standard level (SL)

For admission to the freshman class:
a combination of three HL and three SL
that includes one of the following:
Mathematical Studies, Math Methods, or
Math HL.

Admission to the freshman class is a choice
that can be exercised by the applicant.
Freshman credits may be given for courses
equivalent to those in the certificate earned.
Holders of the IB Diploma may apply for
admission to the sophomore class in the
faculties in the manner indicated below:

  • Biol at HL plus Math Methods or Math HL
  • Chem at HL plus Math Methods or Math HL
  • Phys at HL plus Math Methods SL or Math HL
  • Math Methods or Math HL
  • Phys at HL plus Math HL
Chem at HL, plus Methods or Math HL
  • Biol
  • Chem
  • Phys or Comp. Sc.
  • Math or Comp. Sc.
  • Eng’g
  • FHS
